[She's laughing quietly, but not in a mean way, as she places her hands over his.]

No way.

[Despite his answer his hands stay where they are. Monica can feel the bony ridges of his knuckles this way, the rough texture of skin worked over from years of scraping by. And he, in return, can feel hers. They lock together nicely.]

We're just two good-for-nothings who happen to be going the same way.

[Seki was never cut out for this life. The moment he sees a glimmer of hope, it'll never leave his mind. No matter how many times he tries to beat it out with self-hatred, he's thirsty for the promise of more.

And Monica, well, hell. She's the sun. How can he, a half-grown boy, scrub her out?]

[That was why she was so attracted to him. Seki was different. Seki wasn't like the others. He hid it well, but he was hungry for something better, and that had made him seem so much more alive than anyone else. He was warm that way, and she was drawn to him like a bird seeking shelter in the harsh winter.]

Yeah. That's right. And we're just going to keep going in this direction.

Eventually, Seki breaks it with a sigh.]

We probably will have to skip town, though. You... since you helped me, you're involved in this mess, too.

[Gangs aren't so forgiving to people who meddled with their affairs.]

I've been helping you since the beginning, [she says neutrally, but as she picks at a bandaid wrapped around her finger, she nods.] But you're right. This time, my helping you crossed them.

Hmm. Do you want to see the ocean, maybe?

[truants]

[He would love to.]

What, do you want to rob a bank before we go? Getting a beach house is gonna be trouble.

[... he kind of wants to hold her hand to keep her from picking at that bandaid too, but he'll refrain from it right now.]

I'm definitely not a robber, and we're not waiting for your leg to heal up.

[She drops her hands and grins at him though.]

But I can get us train tickets.

[truants]

[The day has come, huh? He wonders how the beach air would taste. The last time he took a trip was when his family's business was still going strong, many years ago. All the energy spent to survive in this city wiped the details from his memories. With Monica, it'll feel almost like a vacation. They'll have to find jobs, figure out how to pay off the bills that'll come with treating his leg...

But a fighting for honest work is better than scrambling for scraps in a place like this. Seki dares to set his hand on her knee.]

Well, it's not like I can argue. You're in charge of me until I get better. I don't want to get on your bad side.

How soon are we going?

[maskmaker]

I'm glad you know who's in charge here.

[She's joking. She's got to keep joking. She doesn't protest that hand on her knee, comfortable with the contact.]

Early. It's nighttime now, so maybe as early as a couple days.

[truants]

Listen, it's common sense not to argue with people who have money.

[To accentuate that, he gestures at his leg. If she's joking, he'll joke with her too.]

Can you book us a nice room with a beach view?

[maskmaker]

Of course. And a nice breeze, and maybe even complementary breakfast. I haven't had warm bread in years.

[truants]

What? Get outta here. Who's been denying you bread?

[HE WOULD MAKE YOU WARM BREAD, MONICA. Useless as he may be, he has this meager real-world skill at least!!!]
